Sanseveria Trifasciata, Hanbat Arboretum
Sanseveria Trifasciata
Hanbat Arboretum Tropical Garden
Tolerating negleet and even hard treatments this native of South Africa
has long been a popular house plant. In gardens, it is often relared to obseure
and difficult places that receive little attention, thought if properly cared for it can
make an attractive cover. It has learhery leaves that grow from thick rhizomes and,
on some spices, occasional sprays of fragrant flowers.
S. trifasciata, the most commonly grown, occurs in numerous cultivars;
one, for instance, has sword-shaped leaves about 50cm, high dark green with bright
yellow borders; on another the leaves are silver-coloured. S. cylindrica has rounded leaves
and is grown more for its curiosity value than its beauty.
Sansevieria will grow in sun or partial shade but need dry conditions.
Propagation is by division of the rhizomes.
