Hanbat Arboretum Tropical Garden

 

This is an extremetly large genus with some 750 species, ocurring in the New world

 

 from South Florida to Argentina.  They are from South Florida to Argentina.  They are mostly epiphytic,

 though a few grow in the ground and some are found on rocks.

Generally they have thick, stem-like pseudobulbs, each with two leaves that vary considerably in size and

 

shape, and sprays of often showy flowers, mostly in shades of yellow and brown though other colours

 

like green, red, or magenta may appear.  A characteristic of most oncidium flowers is their prominent,

 

fiddle-shapped lip.  on some varieties, the infolrescences can be very long, each bearing a hundred or more

 

flowers.  Many oncidium hybrids have been produced, some poularly known as "Dancing Dolls" with long

 

sprays of bright yellow flowers.  O. "Golden sprays of bright yellow flowers.  O, flexousum and sphacelatum,

 

was the first oncidium hybrid to be developed at the Singaore Botanic Gardens, in 1940,

 

and has become a popolar producer of cut-flowers.
