Royal Palm,
Hanbat Arboretum Tropical Garden
This is a popular palm for planting along avenues or large
gardens. Native to the Caribbean, is has a straight, smooth,
light grey trunk that, when mature, can reach around 25 metres,
with a crown of very large, dark green pinnate leaves; on some
species the trunk is slightly swollen towards the bottom,
especially When young.
The two most commonly grown species are R. regia sometimes called the Cuban Royal Palm,
Roystonea is a true giant and should be used only where its stately form can be appreciated from a
distance. It needs full sun and fairly high humidity. Propagation is by seed.
