Members of the same family as the vine grown commercially for black pepper,

 

these low-growing, fleshy plants are often grown as potted specimens because of their often very

 

ornamental foliage.  With proper cre, some varieties can also be used as ground covers,

 

especially in arreas where temperatures do not rise above the low 8os F. p. obtusifolia, someimes,

 

called "Baby Rubber Plant", has thick green and cream or yellow leaves that are striped like a

 

watermelon and P. caperata has quilted, dark red leaves on red stems.

 

Peperomia usually requires shade and moist but very well-chained soil; overwatering of flooding, will

 

cause the roots to rot.  Propagation is by plant division or stem cutting.
