"에리스리나(Erythrina Coral Tree)"는 "붉고 이국적인 느낌을 가진 정열적인 꽃"을 의미하는 그리스어 "Erythros"에서 유래하는 꽃이다.

 

산호초를 닮았다고 하여 "코랄트리(Coral Tree)라고도  불리운다.   콩과의 낙엽성 관목으로 남아메리카가 원산지이다.

 

Gardening을 할 때, 현관옆이나 창가와 같이 햇빛이 잘 드는 곳에 골라 심으면 이국적인 느낌을 가진 여름의 꽃으로 특색을 살릴수 있다.

 

내한성이 약하기 때문에 우리나라에서는 남부지방의 따뜻한 지역이나 열대식물원에서 이 꽃을 볼 수 있다.

 

멕시코에서는 이 에리스리나로 샐러드를 만들어 먹기도 한다.

 

 

 

 

Erythrina is a genus containing some 100 trees and shrubs,

 

most with spiny thinks and branches and a number that produce strikingly

 

beautiful flowers. 

 

 

 

 

E. variegata(E. indica), one of the most commonly seen, grows up to 15 metres

 

and has large three-parted leaves that may be solid green or boldly pattened

 

with bright yellow; in rrgions with a pronounced dry season,

 

these fall once a year and are followed by beautiful scarlet blossoms.

 

 

 

 

There is also a less common white-flowering variety.

 

E. crista-galli, a smaller tree native to Brazil, has coral-red flowers as well as

 

leaves almost all the time; E. fusca is also free-flowering;

 

and E. corallodendrum, known as the Coral Bean, produces bright red seeds

 

 

 

 

Which are strung into necklaces.

 

Erythrina likes full sun and well-drained soil and bloom best after a period of  drought.

 

Quite large cuttings root easily.

 

 

 

 

Erythrins variegata is a medium is a medium to large tree, commonly reaching

 

15 to 20 in height in 20 years.  It has an erect, spreding form, typically with several

 

vertically oriented branches emerging from the lower stem.
