"메디닐라(Medinilla)"는  잎과 꽃이 아름다운 상록 관목으로 높이가 2.5m 정도 자란다.

 

줄기는 4각 형상으로 되어 있고, 새로 나는 잎은 연녹색이다.  노화된 잎은 진녹색이고, 잎맥이 주맥으로부터 잎 끝을 향아여 곡선을 그리면서

 

종맥으로 나 있다.  잎은 대싱하고 난생 타원형으로 끝은 뽀족하다.  길이는 20cm에 폭은 5~8cm, 싱그럽고 탐스럽다.

 

잎 앞면은 진녹색에 연녹색의 선명한 잎맥을 가졌고, 꽃은 초여름에 개화하여 아래로 늘어져 개화한다.  꽃과 포는 붉다. 

 

원산지는 열대지방으로 아프리카, 동부 아시아, 필리핀에 약 125종이 난다.  

 

 

 꽃꽂이 용도로 사용할 때는 시중에 절화로 나오는 일이 거의 없으므로 온실이나 분화초 등에서 채집하여 사용한다. 

 

꽃이 아래로 쳐져 피는 특성을 살린 현대적 감각의 꽃꽂이에 잘 어울리며 스케일이 있는 거는 꽃이나 매다는 꽃꽂이에도 잘 어울린다.

 

꽃꽂이할대는 파초일엽, 엽란, 산세이베리아, 카틀레야, 알리움, 아레이카야자잎, 필로덴트론, 몬스테라, 아가판서스, 드라세나, 델피니움, 알로에,

 

 심비디움, 아나나스, 아스파라가스, 꽃생강, 스마일, 유카리 같은 소재와 배합할때 잘 어울린다.

 

 

 

 

This is genus of about 300 species contains both erect

 

and epiphytic shrubs.  The best known in tropical garden M. magnifica,

 

 

 

 

an impressive shrub native to the Phillippines which growns up to 2 metres in height,

 

has large, leathly leaves with an ivory-coloured midrib,

 

 

 

 

And periodic masses of pink-red flowers surounded by showy pink bracts.

 

 

 

 

A common name for this speeices is the Rose Grapes.

 

Another species is M. chuingii, an exiphyte which produces very showy displays

 

of pink or light red flowers that hang in pendulous clusters.

 

 

 

 

Medinilla does not do well at lower altitudes and is therefore not often

 

seen in the lowland gardens of South Asia.

 

 

 

 

It is often used in Hawaii, however, where temperatures are cooler

 

and also popular in green houses.  Propagation is by air-layering or woody cuttings.
