"팔레놉시스Phalaenopsis"는 잎이 주걱처럼 넓고 둥그스름한 것이 아름다우며  꽃 또한 화려하면서도 순수하고 기품있는 서양란이다.

 

학명은 "Phalaenopsis Resembling Butterfly"로 꽃의 모양이 나비와 같다고 하여 붙여진 이름, "Moth Orchid"를 한자어로 번역한 것이

 

호접란"이라는 이름인데, 세계적으로는 "Phalaenopsis"라는 이름으로 불리우고 있고, 우리나라에서만 "호접란"이라는 이름으로 불리운다.

 

동남아시아가 원산지인 Phalaenopsis는 나무에 착생하여 자라는 꽃이라고 하는데, 개화기가 긴 것이 특징이다.

 

꽃송이의 끝에서부터 하나씩 지고 피고 피고 지고 하면서 여러날 꽃을 피운다.  원래 개화시기는 겨울부터 봄까지인데 요즘은 원예기술이 발달하여

 

다른 계절에도 볼 수 있는 꽃이기도 하다.  하얀색꽃과 핑크빛 꽃이 대부분인데 얼룩무늬가 들어가 있는 품종도 더러 눈에 띄인다.

 

Phalaenosis의 꽃말은 "당신을 사랑합니다" "행복이 날아옵니다"이다.

Popularly known as Moth Orchids, these are among the most beautiful

 

and graceful of orchids and thus very popular with collections.

 

The genus comprses about 70 species, nearly all epiphytic and tropical andmany hybrids

 

with exceptionally large and delicare flowers that seem to float on their long stems.

 

 

 

 

Generally the plant has a short stem and thick, leathery, dark green leaves

 

that may be quite large.  The slender flowering stem, which can grow to 80cm,

 

in length may have as many as twenty flowers. 

 

P. amabilis, native to Indonesia and New Guinea and one of the most commonly

 

grown species, has large flowers that are white flushed with yellow and a

 

complex inner structure that is yellow striped with red.

 

 

 

 

Other varieties have pure white, pink, or rose flowers.

 

Phalaenopsis species have also been crossed with other genera such as

 

Vanda, Remanthera, and Ascocentrum to produce a wide variety of flower

 

shapes and colours.

 

 

 

 

Phalaenopsis does best in ful lshade and must never dry out, through

 

water should not be allowed to collect in the growing tip.

 

It also needs a porous, very well-drained potting mixture and, in place with

 

heavy rainfall, occasional spraying with fungicide.

 

Regular applications of liquid fertilizer are also beneficial.
