"반다(Vanda)"는 서양란 중에 가장 아름답다는 평가를 받는 식물이다.

 

공중으로 드러난 기다란 뿌리 위로 견고한 질감의 길쭉길쭉한 녹색잎이 서로 마주보며 자라다가 무더운 여름날의 어느 순간 잎겨드랑이에서

 

꽃줄기가 올라와 커다란 꽃이 피는 모습은 보는 이로 하여금 탄성을 자아내게 하는 신비로움이 있는 식물이다.

 

한포기가 보통 1m가 넘는 키가 큰 식물인 반다(Vanda)는 식물을 좀 키운다 하는 사람들 사이에선 "화려함과 아름다움의 극치"라는 찬사를 받으며

 

사랑받고 있는 식물이다.  "반다(Vanda)"는 나무나 바위 같은데 붙어서 기생하는 식물이기 때문에 화분에 심지 않고 뿌리를 공중에 드러낸 채로

 

길게 매달아 키우는게 보통이다.  처음 보는 사람은 공중에  떠 있는 기다란 뿌리의 모양이 좀 기괴하다고 생각할지 모르지만 보면 볼수록 그만의 매력에

 

빠지고 마는 중독성이 강한 식물이다.

전설적인 외모 자체가 워낙 특이한데다가 한 번 핀 꽃이 한 달 이상 계속되기 때문에 실내 어느곳에 연출해도 단번에 모든 이의 눈길을

 

사로 잡는다는 장점이 있지만 일반 가정에서는 키우기 어렵다고 알려진 식물이다.  하지만 처음부터 건강한 것을 골라 기본적인 관리 요령에 충실하면

 

오래오래 잘 키울수 있는 식물이 반다(Vanda)이다.

 

 

 

 

건강한 "반다(Vanda)"는 한 눈에 봐서 전체적으로 잎과 뿌리가 아주 싱싱해 보이는 것이 좋은데, 특히 잎에 얼룩덜룩한 반점이 없고

 

뿌리가 굵고 통통한 것이 좋다.   초보자라면 "반다(Vanda)가 한창때인 늦은 봄부터 이른 가을 사이에 구입해서 키우는 것이 실패를 줄일수 있는 방법이다.

 

 

 

 

The genus Vanda contains some 70 species and a large number of hybrids.

 

Many of which are grown commercially for the cut-flower trade.

 

Mostly esipytic, they are monopodial in growth, which means they have a central

 

stem with one growing tip, the flower stalks emerging from the stem between the

 

leaves in each row; aerial roots are also produced from the stems,

 

which in some varities can grow quite tall.

The flowers are highly varied in appearance and colour and abundantly produced.

 

Vanda can be crossed with a number of other orchid genera, among them Arachnis,

 

Ascocentrum and Renanthera, and there are also natural crosses within the genus itself

 

as well as man-made ones.

 

 

Vanda Tricolor

 

In the wild there is the teh beautiful V. cadrulea, with rare blue or blue-mauve

 

flowers, and V. sanderana, both of which have been used famous natural cross,

 

between V. teres and V. hookeriana, was discovered in her Singapore garden by

 

Miss Agnes Joaquim in 1893; it was subsequently registered under her name and is today

 

Singapore's national flower.

These orchids are generally easy to grow.

 

They like a good deal of sun- at least half a day - a loose potting mixture such as

 

broken brick and charcoal, and regular appolications of liquid fertilizer.
