Monstera was also once lumped among the Philodentron species

 

but is now recognized as a separate genus.  M. collected in the wild from Central America

 

and now popular house plant as well as a striking addition to any Tropical Garden.

 

 

 

 

At first the climber produces these become increasingly large, dark green, and perforated. 

 

On a mature specimen in the tropies, the leaves can be nearly 1 metre long and almost as wide.

 

Periodically it produces a large, creamy white inflorescence consisting of a waxy spathe and spadix;

 

the latter eventually becomes a multi-berried fruit which when ripe hasa taste resebling that of pineapple.

 

Monstera prefers shady, moist conditions and a strong tree or other support against which to grow.

 

Propagation is by means of terminal cuttings.

몬스테라(Monstera Deliciosa)는 "Swiss Cheese Plant"라고도 불리우는데, 마치 "Swiss Cheese"처럼 구멍이 숭숭 뚫린 독특한 잎모양을

 

갖고 있어서 붙여진 이름이다.    주변에서 쉽게 볼 수 있는 식물이라서 이 식물이 열대성 식물이라는 것을 잊고 있을 정도.  대형화분으로도 많이 보급되어 있고

 

몬스테라(Monstera Deliciosa)의 잎은 꽃꽂이 소재로 널리 쓰이고 있고 꽃시장에서 판매되고 있다(둔산화훼종합상가에서 5개 1묶음에 8,000원).

"Cheese Plant" 속명의 몬스테라(Monstera)는 라틴어의 "Monstrum(이상하다)"의 뜻에서 유래.

 

덩굴성의 대형 관엽식물로 20m 까지 자란다.  마디마다 기근이 발생하여 땋에 닿으면 뿌리를 내린다.  잎의 크기는 직경이 큰 것은 1m 정도 되는 것이 있으며

 

광택이 나고 진녹색이다.  잎맥 사이에 타원형의 구멍이 뚫린 특징이 있다.  꽃은 흰색으로 피고 크림색의 열매가 달리는데 향기로운 냄새가 난다.

 

카리브해 사람들은  Monstera의 원추형의 성숙한 과실을 잘라 파인애플, 바나나와 함께 혼합하여 얼음을 넣고 음료로 먹는다.  아즈텍 사람들은 씨를 구워서

 

변비치료제로 사용했다.  중국에서는 Monstera 잎이 몇가지 암치료제로 사용되었다고 전해진다.
