Native to a nimber of tropical and subtropical parts of the world,

 

Begoniaa have long been popular greenhouse plants in temperate countries and are also

 

used in some gardens, especially those with slightly cooler tem[erature. 

 

Many hybrids have been developed, some grown primarily for their ornamental foliage,

 

others for their attractive flowers.  Among the latter group, which come mostly from tropical

 

American species, are B, X, semperflorens, Which has small pink or white flowers,both double

 

and singlem and B. popenoei, on which the panicles of which flowers rise upright above the leaves. 

 

 

 

 

Among the foliage Begonia, B. rex, native to Assam, is one of the best known,

 

along with B. X erythrophylla, which has dark green leaves that are purple and red underneath,

 

and B. heracleifolia, with strikin green-and-bronze star-shaped leaves.

 

 

 

 

Nearly all Begonias prefer moist but well-drained soil and shady econitions, through

 

some will grow in filtered shade.  Propagation is by stem or root cuttings or by division of rhizomes.

 

 

베고니아(Begonia)는 베고니아과의 한 속인데, 아메리카가 원산지이다.  800종 내외가 열대와 아열대에 널리 펴져있는 상록 여러해살이풀이다.

 

예로부터 관엽식물로 많이 애용하였으며 많은 개량 품종이 있다.  높이 15~30cm로 많은 가지가 갈라진다.  줄기는 곧게 자라는 것과 덩굴성이 있고 뿌리줄기 또는

 

잎줄기가 있다.  잎은 어긋나고 좌우가 같지 않으며 가장자리가 밋밋하나 갈라지고 또 톱니가  있는 것도 있으며 대개 턱잎이 없다. 

 

꽃은 단성화로 취산꽃차례를 이루고 수꽃잎은 4개중 2개가 작다.    암꽃은 꽃잎이 5개이고, 씨방에는 3개의 날개가 있으며 많은 종자가 생긴다.

 

베고니아는 구근종, 근경종및 섬근종의 3가지로 크게 나뉜다.   구근종은 비늘줄기 또는 덩이줄기가 있는 품종이다.  알뿌리베고니아(B. tuberhybrida)는

 

덩이줄기가 있으며, 꽃이 가장 아름다운 원예종이다.  줄기가 30~100cm까지 자라고 잎은 일그러진 심장형이다.  

 

꽃은 적색, 홍색, 백색, 황색및 오렌지색등으로 피고 지름 10~20cm의 큰 종류와 만첩으로 되는 것 등이 있다.
