Euphorbia is a huge genus, comprising some 1,000 species that vary widely in

 

appearance and habit but share the characteristic of producing a poisonous 

 

milky-white sap.  Of the several grown as ornamentals, perhaps the best known is

 

E. pulcherrima, the Poinsetia, a Mexican native on which the small flowers are

 

surrounded by large, showy bracts.  Blooming is conditioned by the amount of daylight

 

the plant receives, which in many parts of the world accounts for the familiar displays

 

at Christmas time.

 

 

 

 

In adition to vivid red, the most common colour, there are also white and pink varieties,

 

as well as cultivars with double bracts.  Propagation is from cuttings.

 

Another popular Euphorbia is E. millii "Splendens", the Crown of Thorns, a small

 

shrub from Madagascar with thick, grey, spiny stems and clusters of small.

 

bright coloured flowers.  There are numerious cultivars, often grwon as house plants

 

or in rockeries.  (Botanical Family; Euphorbiaceae)

 

 

 

 

포인세티아(Poincettia)라고 알려져 있는 Euphorbia는 열대 관목으로서 일장이 짧아지고, 온도가 내려가면 포엽이 아름답게 착색되어

 

관상가치를 갖게 된다.  크리스마스 시즌에 개화하는 특성 때문에 미국과 유럽에서는 크리스마스 장식화로 많이 사용되어 왔으며  우리나라에서도 겨울청

 

분화로서 유망하다.  포인세티아는 단일하에서 꽃눈이 형성된다.  포인세티아(Poincettia)는 12시간 15분 이하의 일장이 되면 꽃눈을 형성하기

 

시작한다.  우리나라의 경우 자연일장이 12시간 15분 이하가 되는 시기는 10월 상순부터 3월 중순인데 이 시기는 일장단축과 함께 온도도 영향을 미친다.

 

 

 

 

크리스마스에 없어서는 안 될 포인세티아(Poinsettia)는 멕시코가 원산지로 원래는 크리스마스와 관계가 없는 식물이었다.

 

마귀를 피하는 의미를 가진 적색을 크리스마스에 장식하는 풍습과 함께 미국과 유럽에서 포인세티아를 이용하게 된 것은 19세기 후반부터인 것으로 알려져 있다.

 

아열대 기후인 멕시코가 원산지인 식물이므로 추위에 약한 것이 흠이다.  추위에 피해를 입으면 아랫잎이 누렇게 되어 떨어지거나 전체적으로 원기가 없어진다.

 

포인세티아(Poinsettia)는 멕시코의 식물학자인 "조엘 로버트 포인세트"에 의해 발견되면서 그의 이름을 따 "포인세티아(Poinsettia)"라고불리게 되었다고 한다. 

 

포인세티아(Poinsettia)의 꽃말은 "축하합니다" "축복합니다" "내마음은 타고 있어요"  이다.
