To the average person, this is probably the best known of all orchids because of its

 

showy, often very large flowers and beautiful clolur range. 

 

The genus consists of about 65 spices, nearly all epiphytic and native to Central

 

and South America, Particularly Brazil, as well as thousand of hybrids.

 

Cattleya can be roughly dividedinto two types-those which are two-leafed, or bifoliate,

 

and produce relatively small but numerous flowers at the top of each psecudobulb,

 

and those whicdh are one-leafed or labiate,  and produce fewer but much larger flowers.

The latter group has been used most extensively for hybridization and crossbreeding

 

and is the one most often cultivated by collectors; more Cattleya hybrids are registered

 

than for any other orchid genus.  The flowers generally have a tubular lip and large,

 

spreading sepals and petals; colours range from pure white to deepest purple.

 

 

 

 

Cultivation of Cattleys is similar to that of Dendrobium, except that it seems to

 

prefer slightly cooler weather.  A mixture of firmly packed osminda and charcoal,

 

broken bricks of pot shards is often used, with repotting, every two years or so as  the

 

plant outgrows its containers.   Too much shade will reduce flowering, but too little may result

 

in yellowish leaves; during the growth period it needs plenty of water and high humidity.

 

 

 

 

카틀레야(Cattlaeya)는 외떡잎식물 난초목 난초과의 식물이다.

 

전세계에 약 65종이 있으며 기생 또는 착생식물이다.   아메리카 대륙의 열대지방이 원산지이며 자생지에는 나뭇가지에 붙어서 자란다.

 

속의 명칭은 영국의 식물애호가인 카틀레이(W. Cattley)를 기념하기 위햐여 붙여졌다.  원예에서는 카틀레야속 뿐만 아니라 난초과의 라일리아속

 

(Laelia), 브라시블라속(Brassvola), 소프로니티스속(Sophronitis)을 포함하여 이들 사이에 만들어진 잡종을 통틀어 일컫는 말이다.  이 식물들은 난초과

 

식물들 중에서 가장 대표적인 관상 식물로 재배되는데, 품종이 무려 1,000개에 이르고 꽃색깔이 붉은색, 흰색, 분홍색, 자주색, 자주빛을 띤 붉은색, 귤색, 노란색등'

 

다양하다.  특히 교배종 가운데는 꽃받침, 조각, 꽃잎, 잎술꽃잎 등의 색깔이 각각 다른 것이 많다.  보통 지름이 15~18cm인 커다란 꽃이 2~3개씩 달리지만

 

작은꽃이 10여개씩 달리는 품종이 있다.  각 계절에 따라 피는 꽃과 두 계절에 겹쳐서 피는 꽃이 있으므로 품종을 잘 선택하면 일년내내 꽃을 볼 수 있다.

 

카틀레야(Cattleya)의 꽃말은 "당신은 아름답습니다" "마력" "우아한여성"이다.  사랑하는 연인에게 선물로 적합한 꽃.
