Clerodendrum is a large genus with nearly 400 species

 

that include trees, shrubs, and climbs several of them frequently seen in Tropical Gardens.

 

C. Pnaiculatum, native to Southeaset Asia, is popularly known as the Pagoda Flower

bacause its red-orange flowers appear in a conical form around a spike

 

that rises high above the glossy five-lobed leaves.

It may grow to 3 metres but is usually kept pruned to a 3 metres

which has fragrant white flowers tinged with pink that appear in clusters like an old-fashioned

클레로덴드롬(Cledendrum)은 남아메리카, 열대아시아가 원산지인 통화식물목 마편초과의 여러해살이 덩굴식물로서 난형으로 진한 녹색의 잎에는

 

잎맥의 선이 뚜렷하고 다소 거칠다.  흰색 포엽과 붉은색 꽃잎의 대비가 아름다운 이 꽃은 클레로덴드롬 톰소니에(Clerodendrum C. Thomsoneae)이다.

 

늦은봄 흰색 꽃봉오리가 피어 올라 점점 커지고 6월이 되면 속에서 빨간 꽃잎이 수염을 달고 나온다.  빨간색 술이 떨어지면 흰색 포엽은 차차 붉은색으로 변한다.

 

이 속은 열대아시아와 열대 아프리카에 400속이 분포되어 있고 우리나라에도 3속이 자생한다.  수많은 클레로덴드롬 중에서도 큰 송이가 가장 많이 달리는데다

 

개화기간이 상당히 길고(30일~50일), 화형이 특이하여 많은 사람들에게 사랑받는 식물이다.  자연 상태에서는 주로 봄에 개화하고, 가을에는 봄철보다 개화시기가

 

짧으며 겨울과 여름에는 거의 꽃이 피지 않는다.  클레로덴드롬(Cledendrum)의 학명은 그리이스어의 기회(Chance)라는 뜻을 가진 클레로스(Kleros)와

 

나무라는 뜻을 가진 덴드론(dendron)이라는 단어가 합쳐져서 생겨난 이름인데 이 이름은 나무가 질병을 치유하는 능력을 갖고 있기 때문에 붙여지게 되었다.

영어권 국가에서는 하얀 꽃받침 위로 삐져나와 벌어지는 심장 모양의 붉은 꽃모양으로 인해 "블라딩하트(Bliding Heart)"라고 불리운다.

 

일반적으로 화분에 심어서도 많이 키우지만 유연한 가지들이 늘어지면서 푸짐한 꽃송이를 내기 때문에 "행잉바스켓(Haninging Basket)에 담아 키워도

 

매력적인 식물이지만 추위에 약하다.   클레로덴드롬(Cledendrum)의 꽃말은 "행운을 주는 나무" "행운을 드립니다" 이다.
