인도네시아 현대 미술은 단기간에 선풍적 인기를 끌며 세상 밖으로 나왔다.  이전까지 세계 무대에 잘 알려지지 않았던 인도네시아 미술은

 

소더비나 크리스티 같은 유명 경매회사에서 추정가를 훨씬 넘는 가격에 거래되면서 하루 아침에 세상의 주목을 받기 시작한다.  그러나 이러한 인기의 근원에는

 

오랜 전통의 문화적 잠재력이 뒷받침하고 있다.   인도네이아 현대 미술의 시작은 1970년 반둥(Bandung)과 족자카르타(Yogyakarta) 지역의 작가들이

 

시초가 된 "새미술운동(New Age Movement)" 이라고 볼 수 있다.  이들은 인도네시아 경제적 침체와 사회 정치적 상황에 대한 직접적인 재현방식을 통해

 

자신들의 시각을 드러냈다.  이후 1990년대를 거치면서 인도네시아 현대미술의 국제화가 급속히 진행되는데, 이것은 아시아와 태평양 지역의 국제적인 미술 행사에

 

몇몇 인도네시아 작가들이 초대되면서 시작되었다.  이러한 일련의 전시들은 사회 정치적 메시지와 재현적 요소에 치중되었던 미술 경향을 전환시키는 중요한 계기가 된다.

1990년대까지 주류를 이룬 재현적 미술 경향은 새로운 정부의 등장과 함께 변화하기 시작한다.  민주화의 도래와 함께 표현의 자유가 허락되면서

 

정치 사회적 메시지를 직접적으로 표현하기보다는 자본주의와 대중문화에 대한 다채로운 표현들이 이어졌다.  만화, 일러스트, 광고, 크래피티 같은 대중문화적

 

요소들이 현대미술에 새로운 방식으로 반영되기 시작했다.  또한 디지털 기술과 미디어의 발달은 인도네시아 미술의 재현적 요소와 결합하면서 극사실적 경향을

 

가중시켰고, 다민족 국가의 다양한 관습과 신화는 작품의 네러티브적 요소를 극대화시켜 이야기를 내포하는 풍부한 화면으로 나타났다.

동남아시아에 위치한 인도네시아는 이슬람교 국가로서 자신들만의 독특한 문화를 꽃피워온 문화강국이다.  특히 1970년대에 현대미술은 세계의 주목을 받으며

 

확고한 위치를 차지하기 시작했다.  이처럼 세계에서 주목을 받고 있는 인도네시아 현대 미술의 단면을 확인해 볼 수 있는 특별한 전시가 대전에서 열려 관심을 모은다.

Indonesia contemporary art has come into being, attracting sensational popularity

 

 in a brief time.  It has long been unknown to the international art scene, but as artworks

 

are auctioned at higher prices than anticipated at Sotheby's and Christie's,

 

it has gained worldwide attention.  However, this popularity derives from the country's

 

cultural potential based on its time-honored traditions.

Indonesia contemporary art originated from the New Art Movement initiated by

 

artists in Banding and ogyakarta in 1970.  The artists revealed their perspectives

 

through direct representation of Indonesia's economic depression, and its social political

 

situations.  After the 1990s Indonesian contemporary art rapidly internationalized

 

when a few Indonesian artists were invited to international art events held in Asian

 

and Pacific regions.  Such occations shifted art tendencies highlighting

 

socie-political messages  and representational elements.

Such a representational trend, main-stream to the 1900s, changed with

 

the advent of the new democratic government.  As freedom of ｅxpression was allowed

 

with the emergence of democracy, artists focused on ｅxpressions of capitalism and popular

 

culture rather than conveying socio-political messages.

Contemporary art began reflecting elements of popular culture such as illustration,

 

advertising and graffiti in new ways.

 

A hyper-realist tendency was emphasized with the growth of media and digital

 

technology, combining with Indonesian art's representational factors. 

 

Narractive elements in Indonesian artworks were maximized with th emultiracial

 

naton's abundant customs and myths

Indonesian contemporary artists whose works are on display in the show speak

 

with multiple distinctive voices on the pending issues they face.

 

The exhibition showcases Indonesia's regional characteristics in diverse ways with

 

intense hues, audacious forms, Iyric drawings, and emotonal colors.
